The Old Beef Stringband is a three-piece band based in Miꞌkmaꞌki/Nova Scotia. We play old-time music rooted in the Appalachian region of the American south, combining aspects African-American blues and European fiddle and ballad traditions. The rhythmic groove and variety has fueled our continued interest in playing tunes and songs from this tradition and has inspired our original compositions.
The social aspect of old time; jams and gatherings are a big part of Old Beef events. Shows are usually followed by a jam session with musicians from all walks of life.
The Old Beef Stringband consists of Ellen Kearney (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Amy Lounder (fiddle, vocals) and Dane George (mandolin, banjo, vocals, step dance).
The Folk Club is an open mic event which features local performers and occasionally folk musicians and singers from away. There is a featured performer or performer(s) who play traditional material including, but not limited to, the works of Helen Creighton.
